philosophy.
directing goes beyond giving instruction;
it is the translation of intention to impact.
This might seems obvious, but I believe there is a vast difference between a director who treats creators as vessels, and a director who encourages creators to create.

My first goal in any production meeting, rehearsal room, or performance space is to
foster an environment conducive to trust. Without trust, there is no room fit for creation.

What does this trust look like?

-
Designers feel heard, ownership of, and are excited by how
their contribution adds to the piece as a whole.
-
Performers feel comfortable bringing any misgivings, concerns,
and/or their own ideas to me or my team, both publicly and privately.
-
Audience members feel secure in their role as observer
and/or participant, even if they are not always comfortable.
-
Throughout the entire rehearsal process, there is room for exploration.
-
Any and all creative decisions are reversible
if a question of personal safety, comfort, or identity arises.

As for my direction, I may use any combination of imagery (paintings, photography, collages), sounds (music, clips, effects), or words (of the single or hyphenated variety)
that elicit a visceral reaction I wish to translate to the audience.
I provide the intention, and look to my fellow artists in the room for
the most effective and fulfilling way to create its impact.
